This is a framing page, not a course. The module pairs a student with a physician on a real clinical question and real-life care data.
According to master-mva.com, it is neither an internship nor a research project. It is a first contact with medical questions in the field, with the skills needed to interpret them mathematically, and with real-world care data. The goal is to propose an answer to the physician’s question with the tools of the master.
What the module asks
- Understand the need. Talk with the physicians, with the people who collected the data and with other care staff, until the clinical question is stated precisely enough to be answered.
- Translate it into a statistical or learning problem. What is the outcome, what are the covariates, what population does the data base represent, what would change a clinical decision?
- Propose a possible solution from the data base entrusted to the student, with its limits stated plainly.
How to prepare
The Santé-track pages of these notes cover most of the tools such a project needs:
- study design, survival analysis and confounding: Biostatistics;
- estimation, EM and simulation methods: Computational Statistics;
- images: Medical Image Analysis and Deep Learning for Medical Imaging;
- brain signals: Functional Brain Imaging and Brain–Computer Interfaces;
- shapes and anatomy: Geometric Data Analysis and Geometry and Shape Spaces.
Health data is personal data: anonymisation, access rules and the GDPR apply from the first day.
Deliverables and assessment
- An oral defence of 15 minutes followed by 10 minutes of questions, before the end of March, organised at the convenience of the student and the people involved.
- The referent physician, the other people the student worked with, and an MVA instructor attend.
These are the official rules from master-mva.com; this page adds no assessment of its own.
